Silence (i), from the series Here

College/University: Souhampton Solent University
Course Level/Title: BA Photography

The end of the Vietnam War led to a mass departure of Vietnamese nationals longing for a better life. During the late 1980s, Thi Bui and her family migrated as ‘boat people’ from the North of Vietnam to England. Here is an exploration of Bui’s family background, aspirations and dreams in a new land having settled in Brixton, South West London. Bui’s photographs show a blurring between Vietnamese and English culture. ‘An entire past comes to dwell in a new house. The old saying: “We bring our lairs with us” has many variations…’ (Gaston Bachelard,1958) www.thibui.co.uk
